Banana Sunday: Clever Teacher Comeback

"If at first you don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything."
                                                  -William Lyon Phelps (1865-1943)
This quote was written on a Chiquita banana with a black Uniball Signa. (LOVE that pen ;)

Today's banana-wisdom comes from a man who was quite an amazing character in real life. Phelps just may be the only person to ever graduate from Yale and Harvard in the same year. You read that correctly. In 1891, he earned his A.M. from Yale and his PhD. from Harvard. (In contrast, I am lucky if I can read two chapters from the same book in one week.)
Phelps went on to teach at Yale for 41 years, while also having his own radio show, touring as a public lecturer, and writing. He once famously asked his students to discuss the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins' "sprung rhythm" technique. One student wrote this on his exam: "Only God knows the answer to your question. Merry Christmas." After the holiday, Phelps returned the paper with this note: "Happy New Year. God gets an A; you get an F."
         Isn't that classic?
Have you ever had the opportunity to deliver a clever smart-alecky response like that?
